Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, whereas malaria is a parasitic infection transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito. Since both types of mosquito are prevalent on Nicaragua's "Mosquito Coast," anyone with a compromised immune system should not travel to this region, particularly during the rainy season.
