Most canvases used by artists in the preindustrial United States were imported from Europe, but the wooden stretchers on which the canvas was mounted were always made from American wood. Retailers of art supplies, both in the United States and Europe, often stamped blank canvases with their names and addresses. Completed paintings brought from Europe to America were frequently taken off their European stretchers for shipping and remounted on American stretchers after their arrival.
